The Introduction of the Special Issue

The development of robot provides a lot of convenient services for people's life and brings huge progress to the society. The robot has penetrated into every area of modern life, such as, the building robot can finish the work which is difficult for the construction workers; the welding robot can let the workers avoid the harm of eyes; the transfer robot can greatly saves labor for workers; the domestic robot can instead of housewife’s hard work; the development of soft robots has led to the development of new materials; besides, the unmanned aerial vehicles and oceanographic robot make the original difficult tasks become possible. Therefore, the development of robots has brought great progress to the society.

However, there are still many problems in the development of robots, which need to be studied and discussed by human beings. For example, the discussion of soft robot materials, the vibration, the accuracy of motion trajectory and repeated positioning of industrial robot; the transfer robot whether falling the object or not and adopt which handling methods in the process of handling; the detection depth of the oceanographic robot and so on. These practical problems are refined into scientific problems. In fact, they are kinematics, dynamics, control, electricity, materials science, electromechanical coupling and structural optimization. Therefore, the advanced methods and the advanced thoughts of different disciplines as well as the advanced material are needed to be developed.

As such, this special issue will focus on the current state-of-the-art, latest advances, and future trends of various robots’ kinematics, dynamics, control algorithms, structural optimization, reliability and robustness, advanced soft robot materials, etc. The key objective is to improve robot's performance, the motion accuracy, stability, reliability and safety by overcoming relevant key technical and scientific issues. The robot structures include mechanical transmission device, power device, driver, controller, body, etc., as well as advanced materials of the soft robot. So, the topics of this special issue might include, but not limited to, kinematic analysis, vibration research, structural optimization, reliability evaluation, fatigue analysis and design, lifetime analysis (or prediction) and design, strength analysis and design, monitoring and diagnosis, control algorithms, etc., as well as advanced soft materials. This special issue welcomes theoretical, analytical, and experimental investigations on robots. These contributions will advance the body of knowledge and its applications for structural health monitoring, optimization and reliability design with respect to the structural dynamics, nonlinear vibrations, time series modeling techniques, mathematical modeling methods, computer simulation technologies, reliability-based design optimization techniques, multidisciplinary optimization approaches, and other related algorithms and new applications in the robots.
