Counteractions: A Dialogue with “Everyday Resistance”
Abstract
James C. Scott's concept of "everyday resistance" cannot accurately reflect the behavioral fact of the bottom society. This article compares it with the "counter-behavior" proposed by Gao Wangling:1. Question the appropriateness of the word "resistance" and holds that "resistance" cannot contain the action connotation of covert erosion and evasion.2.Find that "everyday resistance" ignores local knowledge and individual irrational elements after analyzing goals of "resistance." 3. The continuity of peasants’ behaviors is the core factor determining the success of "resistance," and "everyday resistance" does not pay attention to the continuity of behaviors. The article concludes with a concept--"everyday counteractions," to make up for the deficiency of the concept of "everyday resistance."Copyright (c) 2021 Ming Lu
